The Great Eastern Question and the Strange Case of Lebanon: Four narratives for a nation. An essay on multiculturalism and governance in the age of identity politics, entitlement and globalized elite. - Book by Iyad Georges Boustany
The Great Eastern Question and the Strange Case of Lebanon by Iyad Georges Boustany explores the complex issues of multi-culturalism, governance, and the potential extinction of Lebanon’s Christian Phoenician-descended population. Disturbed by the apathy and moral decline of Lebanon’s Christian elite, Boustany sought to propose a fair solution, starting in 2005 with the creation of the "Orthodox Electoral Law." While he developed a solution for managing Lebanon’s ethno-cultural diversity, implementation proved difficult due to the indifference of other groups and the rise of identity politics among the Christian elite. The book, though analytically sound, arrives too late, capturing the decline of a civilization that once embodied openness, diversity, and cosmopolitanism. What began as a hopeful solution now serves as a melancholic reflection on the fading legacy of Levantine Christianity, akin to a tragic historical decline.
