Who We Are and How We Got Here: Ancient DNA and the New Science of the Human Past - Book by David Reich
Genealogical research has made enormous strides in recent years. Advances in genetic methods allow us to explore ancestry both spatially and temporally. The analysis of ancient DNA has revealed that migrations and intermingling between different peoples have occurred on our planet since the early history of humankind. For example, about 5,000 years ago, in the last great migration, the Yamnaya culture met the Corded Ware culture in Europe. Each of these migratory movements can be traced through the genetic examination of living people and their comparison with ancient human remains. Interested individuals can obtain information about their ancestors and their places of origin through genetic tests. The latter is done by comparing haplotypes. We know that mutations occur in the human genome and are passed on to the next generation. These occur in populations around the globe to varying degrees depending on the region, allowing us to geographically assign individuals based on their haplotypes.
