We - Book by Yevgeny Zamyatin

We is a dystopian novel set in a future society governed by strict logic, order, and totalitarianism. The story is told through the journal entries of D-503, a mathematician and builder of the spaceship Integral. In this world, the government controls every aspect of life, including relationships and emotions. The citizens, known as Numbers, live under constant surveillance and follow a rigid schedule. D-503 initially embraces this life, but his perspective changes when he meets I-330, a rebellious woman who introduces him to forbidden concepts like love and individuality. D-503’s inner turmoil grows as he becomes increasingly entangled in I-330’s resistance against the One State. Zamyatin’s novel explores themes of freedom, conformity, and the conflict between the individual and the collective, making it a precursor to later dystopian works like 1984.
