Tales told by old fountains of Thessaloniki - Book by Ioannis Artopoulos

Public fountains were once among the most beautiful and essential structures in Thessaloniki, providing water to citizens since ancient times. Excavations have uncovered fountains, such as one from the Roman era in front of the Bey Hamami. These fountains continued to exist through the Byzantine period and into the Ottoman occupation when only the elite had running water, forcing others to rely on public fountains. Over time, however, many fountains were neglected, destroyed, or collapsed due to lack of maintenance. This book documents the history of 85 surviving fountains, 18 cisterns, 10 fiales, and other water structures, sharing their historical significance and including 360 photographs. It also highlights stories related to these water resources that connect to Thessaloniki’s history.
