In this memoir, journalist Nicholas Gage recounts his mother Eleni’s life and death during the Greek Civil War (1946–1949). The family lived in a remote village where communist guerrillas and government forces fought for control. When the guerrillas tried to conscript village children, Eleni arranged for her own children—including young Nicholas—to escape to freedom.
