Eleni - by Nicholas Gage
In this memoir, journalist Nicholas Gage recounts his mother Eleni’s life and death during the Greek Civil War (1946–1949). The family lived in a remote village where communist guerrillas and government forces fought for control. When the guerrillas tried to conscript village children, Eleni arranged for her own children—including young Nicholas—to escape to freedom. For this act of defiance, she was arrested, tortured, and executed. Years later, Gage returns to Greece to investigate her killers, seeking both truth and justice.
